Swallowing disorders are a common problem in cases of brain injury caused by strokes and in many other neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
The outpatient swallowing clinic has been an important part of the MVZ for over ten years - a specialisation that enjoys an excellent reputation in specialist circles far beyond the borders of Troisdorf. It took two years for those responsible at the licensing authorities to give the green light for the start of a project that was unique in Germany at the time. Linking a speech therapy practice to a medical care centre was fundamentally new in 2010 and required a pioneering spirit from everyone involved.
A team of six swallowing therapists is now available to people with swallowing disorders, providing inpatient, outpatient and home visit care - both regionally and nationally.
During clinical swallowing diagnostics, the parameters relevant to swallowing, such as muscle strength and reflexes, are tested in addition to the patient's medical history, and the sequence of events is observed. Taking all factors into account, an assessment of the severity of the swallowing disorder can be made. However, a Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is usually recommended for a precise assessment and estimation of the risk of aspiration.

The abbreviation FEES stands for Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing.
In endoscopic swallowing diagnostics, a thin endoscope is inserted into the throat through the nose and remains above the larynx. While the patient eats something, it is possible to observe what happens to the food in the throat. Is it following the right path into the oesophagus, or is there some leftover food in the throat or is it even getting into the lungs?
It is a very good complementary diagnostic tool to clinical diagnostics and can be carried out here on an outpatient basis without any problems. In addition to recommendations for further food intake, it also provides important information for the therapeutic procedure. Radiological swallowing examinations can only be carried out on an inpatient basis.

In the course of our work, we have developed a number of therapeutic specialisations. We treat patients with
